A Study
of Optimization of Process by Using Taguchi's Parameter Design
Approach --
Zillur Rahman and Faisal Talib
Taguchi
Methods (TMs) are statistical methods developed by Genichi
Taguchi to improve the quality of manufactured goods. Recently,
TMs have been used in the areas of biotechnology, marketing,
advertising industries, corporations and universities (Sreenivas
Rao et al., 2004). TMs are intended as cost-effective method
to improve the performance of a product by reducing its variability
in the customer's usage conditions.

Six
Sigma in Indian Automotive Components Sector: A Survey --
Prabhushankar G V, S R Devadasan and P R Shalij
This
paper examines the status and issues of Six Sigma program
in Indian automotive components sector. Using an empirical
approach, the paper traces improvements in sigma level, savings
achieved, metrics used for measuring the performance of Six
Sigma project and the methodologies adopted. The result from
a survey of 25 companies suggests that financial constraint
is the significant barrier for implementing Six Sigma.

Stochastic Behavior and Maintenance Planning of a Screening
System in a Paper Plant --
Rajiv
Khanduja, P C Tewari and Sanjeev Garg
The
paper discusses the stochastic behavior analysis and maintenance
planning of Screening System in a paper plant, consisting
of four subsystems A, B, CI and DJ,
arranged in a series with three statesgood, reduced
and failed. Failure and repair rates of each subsystem are
considered to be constant. The mathematical formulation is
done by using simple probabilistic approach. An expression
for the steady state behavior is given.

Simultaneous
Scheduling of Machines and Material Handling System in a Flexible
Manufacturing Environment Using Differential Evolution Approach
--
M V Satish Kumar, C S P Rao and G Rangajanardhan
Flexible
manufacturing environment seems to be a very promising technology
and has proved to be the right answer for the highly dynamic
manufacturing environment. Material handling is one of the
essential components in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS).
A carefully designed and managed Material handling system
is important for achieving the required integration in a manufacturing
environment. Differential Evolution (DE), one of the latest
members of the population-based heuristics group, has been
proved to be a simple yet effective adaptive scheme developed
for global optimization over continuous spaces.
